Top tips for choosing your wedding cake maker

Choosing the right wedding cake maker for you

Choosing a wedding cake maker is a critical part of your wedding planning. Your cake isn’t just dessert; it’s a centrepiece that reflects your style and leaves a lasting impression on your guests. But with so many options, how do you make the right decision?

In this post, I’ll guide you through the process, common mistakes to avoid, and key questions to ask when choosing your wedding cake maker. This will help you make an informed decision and ensure the cake complements your big day perfectly.

Why does the wedding cake maker’s style matter when it comes to choosing a wedding cake maker?

One of the biggest mistakes couples make is overlooking the specific style and expertise of their wedding cake maker. Each designer has their own artistic approach, which might not always match your vision.

If you want a modern cake with clean, sharp edges, hiring a designer who focuses on rustic finishes won’t bring the result you’re hoping for. It’s vital to find someone who specialises in the style you love.

Does every wedding cake maker master all techniques?

Not every wedding cake maker has mastered every technique, which is why it’s so important to know what they specialise in before making your choice. Cake design is a unique art form with many methods, ranging from fondant work to delicate wafer paper flowers.

For example, I specialise in creating abstract  wafer paper flowers and statement scupltures, which add a beautiful, unique  look to cakes. My designs focus on intricate textures and contemporary finishes, creating something truly bespoke and personal to your wedding.

What’s the difference between traditional and contemporary wedding cake designs?

When choosing a wedding cake designer, you’ll need to decide whether you want a traditional or contemporary cake. Traditional cakes can often feature rounded tiers, but can also feature a more modern sharp edge.  The tiers may all be of the same depth, usually around 4” or 5” deep maximum.  More traditional style textures including quilting, small ruffles and uniform swag like draping.  Ribbons or pearls around the base of the tiers and more traditional posey style symmetrical flower arrangements.

Contemporary designs, like those in my Couture Collection, are more bold and artistic. Inspired by architecture, ceramics, and fabrics, these cakes often feature sharp lines, tall tiers, and unique, abstract elements. If you’re looking for something modern and striking, this collection might be for you.

How can I make sure I get a unique cake design when choosing a wedding cake maker?

Some wedding cake makers specialise in creating bespoke designs, while others might work from existing ideas or replicate designs shown to them by couples. If you’re looking for a one of a kind creation, it’s essential to find a designer who understands your vision and creates something original.

I work closely with my clients to design cakes that reflect their personalities, wedding style, and preferences. Whether it’s the bold structures of the Couture Collection, the refined elegance of the Minimalistic Collection, or the romantic floral details of the Belissima Collection, each cake is a unique piece of edible art.

How can I tell if a wedding cake maker’s portfolio fits my style?

Before committing to a wedding cake maker, always review their portfolio. Look for variety, technical skill, and attention to detail. Does their previous work reflect the type of cake you want? Are they experienced in the kind of design you’re looking for?

For example, my portfolio includes three distinct collections:

Couture Collection:

Inspired by architecture, ceramics, and fabrics for couples seeking bold, contemporary designs.

Minimalistic Collection:

Sleek and understated for those who prefer clean lines and simplicity.

Belissima Collection:

Each collection reflects a different style, so couples can choose the one that resonates most with their wedding day.

What should I ask my wedding cake designer in our first communications?

Your first communications with a wedding cake maker are an opportunity to ask important questions and ensure you’re both on the same page. Here are a few questions that can help guide the discussion:

What’s your design process like?

Can you accommodate my wedding date and location?

Do you specialise in a particular cake style or technique?

How do you handle dietary restrictions or special requests?

How far in advance should I book?

Will I receive a sketch of the design before I commit to the final design?

How do you handle delivery and setup on the wedding day?

These questions help ensure you and your designer have a clear understanding of what you want, so there are no surprises later on.

What are the common mistakes when choosing a wedding cake maker?

Choosing the right wedding cake maker can be challenging, but avoiding these common mistakes can make the process easier:

Focusing only on price

While budget matters, your wedding cake is an investment. Choosing based solely on cost can result in disappointment.

Not considering their style

Every designer has their own aesthetic. Ensure that your chosen wedding cake maker can deliver the style you want for your wedding day.

Booking too late

Popular designers book up quickly. Reach out once your wedding date and venue are confirmed to avoid missing out on your ideal cake maker.

Frequently asked questions (Faqs)

How far in advance should I book my wedding cake designer?

I recommend booking your designer 12-24 months before your wedding to secure your date.

Do you offer bespoke wedding cake designs?

Yes, I specialise in creating unique, custom designs tailored to each couple’s wedding style.

Can I request specific flavours for my cake?

Absolutely. We’ll discuss your favourite flavours during the consultation to ensure your cake tastes as good as it looks.

How do you accommodate dietary restrictions?

I offer options for gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan cakes to cater to any dietary needs and lifestyle choices. However, please note that while I accommodate intolerances and preferences, I do use nuts, gluten, and other allergens in my kitchen. Therefore, I cannot guarantee no cross-contamination so, unfortunately, for this reason, I am unable to cater for allergies.

Will you handle delivery and setup on the wedding day?

Yes, I personally coordinate with your venue and handle all aspects of delivery and setup to ensure everything runs smoothly.
