The versatile 3 tier wedding cake remains a popular choice when it comes to choosing the overall look for your wedding cake. Offering an elegant look with plenty of options for serving sizes, the 3 tier wedding cake is seen as the perfect size visually. And the best part? It can be tailored to your guest count with a few customisations.
In this post, I’ll walk you through what a 3 tier wedding cake can serve and the key factors that affect servings – so you can feel confident about making the right choice for your day. And along the way, I’ll even introduce a few cake terms that you’ll often hear us cake makers use, helping you understand the details that make all the difference.
What affects the number of servings in a 3 tier wedding cake?
How many slices in a 3 tier wedding cake varies depending on several factors, including the portion size, cake tier heights, and tier dimensions. Traditionally, wedding cakes were made with 4” deep tiers, making serving numbers easier to calculate.
How do tier depths influence serving sizes?
Now with cake tiers ranging from the new standard of 5” or 6” deep, they can quite often go beyond this, requiring us to consider these differences in determining servings.
Before we go any further, it is important to ascertain the difference in portion sizes, cut by most venues. These are generally known as finger slices and dessert slices.
What size is a wedding cake dessert portion?
These are typically 1″ x 2″ x 5″, served as dessert at a wedding breakfast, and meant to be a bit more generous.
What size is a wedding cake finger portion?
These smaller portions are usually served during an evening reception or buffet, ideal for lighter, bite sized slices.
Dessert portions vs. finger portions
For dessert portions, you’ll need enough cake for each daytime guest.
If you’re serving the cake as part of an evening buffet, I generally recommend planning to feed 75-80% of the total guest count.
However, if your guests are known cake lovers, you might want to cater for 100% – it’s totally up to you and your preferences.
What’s the difference between cake layers and cake tiers?
This brings me to a quick side note on the difference between cake layers and cake tiers—two terms that are often confused.
Cake layers are the individual sections of cake, usually sandwiched with buttercream or ganache, that come together to make a single cake.
Cake tiers, on the other hand, are the separate full cakes that stack up to create a traditional, multi-tiered wedding cake.
How are cake sizes measured?
Cake sizes are measured by both their diameter and depth.
I’m sharing this information so you can better understand the sizes in the examples below.
These measurements can also be helpful if you spot a configuration you like – you can show it to your cake maker, taking all the guesswork out of it for them.
Now that you understand portion sizes and tier sizes, let’s dive into different standard size examples of 3 tier wedding cakes, each designed to serve various guest counts.
Small 3 tier wedding cake
This is what I’d call a standard small 3 tier cake. Each tier is 6” deep, a depth that many wedding cake makers consider standard today.
Wedding cake tier sizes
4” top tier,
6” middle tier
8” bottom tier
Number of cake servings
This will feed up to 65 guests as finger slices or up to 34 as dessert slices.
(Macarons not included in serving calculations)
Medium 3 Tier Wedding Cake
The medium 3 tier cake is perfect for a larger gathering while maintaining an elegant look. Each tier in this example is also 6” deep.
Cake ttiers sizes
5” top tier,
7” middle tier, and
9” bottom tier
Number of cake servings
This will feed up to 95 guests as finger slices or up to 46 as dessert slices
Large 3 Tier Wedding Cake
For a larger celebration, a large 3 tier cake may be ideal. In this example each tier is slightly shallower at 5” deep, allowing a good balance between portions and presentation.
Cake tiers sizes
6” top tier
8” middle tier
10” bottom tier
Number of cake servings
This will feed up to 120 as finger slices or up to 60 as dessert slices
The versatility of a 3 tier wedding cake
Each of these cake configurations allows for flexibility in both presentation and serving sizes. Whether you are serving finger slices with your evening buffet or dessert slices with your wedding breakfast, these options can be tailored to suit your guest list.
Custom sized wedding cake inspiration
So know we have the standard sizes and servings, why don’t we have some fun and explore some different heights and shapes.
Cake tiers sizes
5” wide x 6″ deep – top tier
7” wide x 8″ deep – middle tier
9” wide x 4″ deep – bottom tier
Number of cake servings
This will feed up to 120 guests as finger slices or up to 60 as dessert slices
Cake tiers sizes
5” wide x 5″ deep – top tier
7” wide x 8″ deep – middle tier
8” wide x 8″ deep – bottom tier
Number of cake servings
This will feed up to 155 guests as finger slices or up to 77 as dessert slices
Cake tiers sizes
5” wide x 6″ deep – top tier
6” wide x 8″ deep – middle tier
8″ wide x 2″ deep – spacer tier (not cake)
10” wide x 5″ deep – bottom tier
Number of cake servings
This will feed up to 85 guests as finger slices or up to 42 as dessert slices
This one could arguably be considered a 4 tier wedding cake. However, the shallow tier (second from the bottom) is in fact, what is known as, a ‘spacer’ tier (a polystyrene centre, covered in icing, to look like the rest of the cake) and not edible.
NB The hexagon bottom tier yields less servings than a round cake.
Square 3 tier wedding cake
And lastly, I am going to throw in a 3 tier square cake. Again this could be considered a 4 tier cake due to it’s acrylic spacer tier (the bottom acrylic box is the cake stand).
Another little gold nugget of information – square cakes offer more servings than round cakes of the same diameter – about 20% more. This can be a helpful consideration if you’re keen on maximizing servings while keeping the cake size manageable.
Cake tiers sizes
5” wide x 5″ deep – top tier
6” wide x 6″ deep – acrylic spacer
7” wide x 5″ deep – second from bottom tier
8″ wide x 5″ deep – bottom tier
10″ wide x 6″ deep – acrylic cake stand
Number of cake servings
This will feed up to 155 as finger slices or up to 77 as dessert slices
Frequently asked questions (Faqs)
How much wedding cake for 60 guests?
A small 3 tier cake with standard servings will easily serve around 60 guests, if you are opting for finger slice portions. This setup could feature:
4” top tier, 6” middle tier and 8” bottom tier (check out my examples further up this blog post).
How many tiers of wedding cake for 100 guests?
A medium sized 3 tier wedding cake can serve around 100 guests when the tiers are slightly taller or include more substantial base diameters.
An arrangement for 100 guests could be:
5″ top tier, 7″ middle tier (extra tall) and 9″ bottom tier (check out my examples further up this blog post).
Alternatively, a small 4 tier would work well.
How many tiers of wedding cake do I need for 80 guests?
A medium sized 3 tier wedding cake is ideal for up to 80 guests, when serving finger slice portions, as part of an evening buffet. With this size you will have approximately 15 slices over your guest count.
How many tiers do I need for 120 guests?
For a larger guest list, I’d suggest either increasing the tier height or possibly adding an additional tier to the design. While a 3 tier cake can still work for 120 guests, you’ll likely want at least one double-height tier or slightly larger base sizes to ensure everyone enjoys a slice. This all depends on the style of wedding cake you are envisaging.
How many people will a 3 tier cake feed?
In general, a 3 tier wedding cake will serve anywere between 34 and 125 guests, depending on slice size, tier height, and portion type.
Your wedding cake designer will work with you to adjust for these variables based on your needs, so you have precisely the right amount.
