How to decide on your wedding cake budget

When contacting a wedding cake designer, the first questions you’ll likely hear are:

  • What’s your wedding date?
  • Which venue have you chosen?
  • How many guests are you expecting?
  • And finally, what’s your budget for the wedding cake?

But here’s the thing: how do you even begin to decide on a wedding cake budget? If this is your first time ordering a wedding cake (and for most couples, it is), how can you possibly know what to expect when it comes to costs?

Your wedding cake is more than just dessert; it’s a reflection of your style , an impactful centrepiece and a talking point for your guests. Yet, for many couples, working out how much to budget for their wedding cake can feel like a stab in the dark.

What will you learn from this article?

In this article, we’ll explore what’s most important to you when it comes to your wedding cake.

You’ll reflect on the value it holds for your big day, helping you understand how much you’ll realistically need to budget to achieve the design and taste you want.

Finally, I’ll guide you in balancing your dream cake with what you can afford AND what you feel comfortable spending.

And with this new information, choosing your wedding cake budget will be a breeze.

The proof is in the pudding – or in this case, the cake

Firstly I am going to start by saying that not all wedding cake makers are equal.  They each have unique niches, skill sets, and specialities in both design and taste.

And I mention taste, because how often have you eaten a dry, tasteless piece of cake at a wedding? Believe me, they’re not all like that.

With the right wedding cake maker, your cake will taste as fantastic as it looks and therefore this is a crucial budget consideration.

In life, you don’t always get what you pay for, but with wedding cakes, you usually do.

Right, with that in mind, let’s get started!

Understanding your priorities is the first step in setting a realistic budget. Let’s explore where you might fit.

Which couple are you?

When it comes to wedding cakes, couples tend to fall into three broad categories:

The first type of couple loves cake. For them, the wedding cake is more than just dessert; it’s a key part of the day. They see it as a centrepiece, a talking point, and a reflection of their style. Naturally, the cake is high on their priority list and they want it to make a statement.

The second type of couple still wants a wedding cake. After all, who doesn’t love a beautiful cake – and a delicious slice to enjoy? But while they appreciate its charm, it’s not something they want to invest too heavily in.

Then there’s the third type of couple. Cake isn’t their thing, and they don’t see much value in having one. Still, they might feel that a wedding cake is just one of those “must-haves.” For them, it’s likely to be a small, simple cake with minimal cost.

Which couple are you?  (and there really is no right or wrong answer here, just be truthful with yourself)

The budget vs. importance scale

When it comes to budgeting for your wedding cake, there’s often a clear pattern:

Couple number one typically has a higher budget. They place great importance on the cake and are happy to invest in it as a standout feature of their celebration.

Couple number two still values the cake but is more likely to set aside a moderate budget—enough to get something beautiful, though not extravagant.

Then, we have couple number three, who tend to have the smallest budget for the cake. For them, the cake is more of a formality rather than a focal point.

Of course, this scale is not rigid. There will always be exceptions, and every couple’s priorities will differ.

The key point here is if your wedding cake is not a significant aspect of your wedding, never expect your cake maker to provide your cake any cheaper just because it is not important to you.  No matter where you fall on the budget or importance scale, the amount of time, skill, and passion poured into your wedding cake remains the same.

A wedding cake is a luxury item.  Something you choose to invest in because you desire it, not because you have to. And if the cake or cake-cutting tradition isn’t for you, that’s absolutely fine!  There’s no rule saying you must have a cake. Today’s weddings are all about personal choices, and it’s your day to design as you see fit.

Where do you sit on the budget scale?

A great way to gauge where you sit on the wedding cake budget scale is to start by browsing websites. Many cake designers will offer a price guide, giving you an idea of what you might expect to pay.

For bespoke wedding cakes, it’s important to remember that no two cakes are ever the same. Because of this, it’s nearly impossible to have a fixed price list.

That said, most wedding cake websites will still provide a general indication of cake costs, giving you a helpful starting point for your budget.

On my site, I even provide an average client spend per cake size, which can give you a clearer idea of what you might be looking at. Here you can take a look at the details on my price guide page

Can’t find a price guide?

If you can’t find a price guide on the wedding cake maker’s website, don’t worry!  Simply reach out to them with your wedding date, venue, and expected guest count.

Most will be able to provide you with a starting figure, at the very least.  From there, you’ll get a sense of what your budget can accommodate and whether it aligns with your expectations.

This initial conversation will help you better understand the price range and make an informed decision about how much you’re comfortable spending.

New to wedding cakes?

If you’re unfamiliar with wedding cake pricing, it’s normal to feel surprised at first.

However, once you have looked into their prices in more detail, you’ll start to understand the cost involved in creating the perfect cake. Slowly, you’ll become more comfortable with the price, realising that to get what you really want, it will cost you X amount.

Of course, the amount you’re willing to spend will largely depend on how important you feel the cake is to your day.

So what are the main elements/factors that affect the price of a wedding cake?

The main factors that will affect the overall price of a wedding cake are typically:

How many portions/tiers you require?

Shape

Square or hexagon shaped cakes require a higher skill level and more time to create so generally cost more than a round cake.

Intricacy – how much detail is required/desired?

Hand crafted flowers – these are a labour of love, taking hours to make.  They will always cost more than fresh, dried or faux flowers, due to their time heavy nature.

Fondant (otherwise known as sugarpaste) – cakes covered in fondant will generally cost more than a ganache or buttercream finished designs due to the extra time and expense involved in this extra stage of the cake decorating process.

When you adore cake, but your budget doesn’t quite match the cake you envisioned

Of course, there’s one more couple I have yet to mentioned—the couple who absolutely adores cake but simply doesn’t have the financial budget for their dream wedding cake.

If you find yourself in this situation, and the quote for your perfect cake has left you shocked and disheartened, don’t despair! A good cake maker will always try to help, as long as your budget aligns with their minimum spend. Often, they’ll be able to suggest alternative ideas that, while different from your original vision, will still be something you love once you’ve come to terms with the financial reality.

That being said, even the most talented designer won’t be able to perform miracles with an unrealistic budget. So, it’s important to remain open-minded and keep your expectations practical.

In the end, the goal is to find a solution that works for both your budget and your vision – and you might even discover that the alternative design you settle on is just as perfect as the original idea you had!

Frequently asked questions (Faqs)

How do I determine the right budget for my wedding cake?

Start by prioritising what matters most, such as design, flavour, or guest count. If the wedding cake is a significant part of your celebration, you might allocate a higher budget.

Research average costs on cake makers’ websites (who fit your style) and consider your guest count, design complexity, and personal preferences to set a realistic budget.

What factors influence the cost of a wedding cake?

Several elements affect the price, including the number of tiers, cake shape (square or hexagonal shapes are more expensive), level of intricacy, type of decorations (handcrafted flowers versus fresh or faux flowers), and the type of finish (fondant generally costs more than ganache or buttercream).

What if the cake design I want exceeds my budget?

If your dream cake is out of reach, consult with your cake designer. They can suggest alternative designs or modifications to fit your budget.

Keep an open mind and be flexible with your expectations to find a design you’ll love that stays within your financial limits.

Is it common for wedding cake prices to initially surprise couples?

Yes, it’s quite common for couples to experience sticker shock when they first receive quotes.

However, as you research more and understand the craftsmanship involved, you’ll get accustomed to the pricing and find a budget that suits your needs.

Can I get a price estimate if a cake designer’s website doesn’t have a price guide?

Absolutely. Contact the designer with details about your wedding date, venue, and guest count. They can provide a starting figure or a rough estimate, helping you gauge whether their services align with your budget.
